Big Jobs Week Ahead: Where Hiring Stands Before the October Report (Nov. 1, 2026)

This is a big week for job market news. The government will release three reports in four days: job openings on Tuesday, weekly jobless claims on Thursday and the October jobs report on Friday. Here's a plain-language look, as of November 1, 2026, at where the numbers stand going in and what to watch if you're hiring in Monroe, southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio or anywhere else.

Where hiring stood in September

According to the BLS September jobs report (opens in a new tab), employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, below the average of 45,000 a month over the prior year. The unemployment rate was 4.2 percent, and it has stayed between 4.1 and 4.3 percent since March. Revisions also took 60,000 jobs off the July and August totals, so hiring was a bit weaker this summer than first reported.

There were bright spots for the industries we serve. Manufacturing added 9,000 jobs and is up 72,000 since its low point in December 2025, with gains in plastics and rubber products and in machinery. Factory workers averaged 40.6 hours a week, with 3.0 hours of overtime. Average hourly pay for private-sector workers reached $37.81, up 3.0 percent from a year earlier.

Openings steady, workers staying put

The BLS job openings and turnover report (opens in a new tab) showed about 7.1 million open jobs at the end of August, little changed from July. Employers made 5.2 million hires, and 3.1 million workers quit, a quit rate of 1.9 percent. Layoffs stayed low at about 1.6 million. In plain terms, companies are still looking for people, but workers aren't switching jobs very often, so good candidates can be harder to pry loose.

Layoffs remain low

The most recent Department of Labor weekly claims report (opens in a new tab) showed 194,000 first-time claims for unemployment in the week ending October 24, down from 221,000 a year earlier. The four-week average fell to 196,750, its lowest point in the past year. Employers are holding on to the workers they have, which is one reason open jobs can sit unfilled.

What to watch this week

  • Tuesday's openings number. If openings drop well below 7 million, demand for workers is cooling. If quits climb, workers feel confident enough to leave, and you may need to work harder to keep your best people.
  • Friday's jobs report. Watch the manufacturing and transportation and warehousing lines, plus overtime hours. Rising overtime often means employers are stretching current staff before they add people.
  • Your own year-end plan. With layoffs low and job switching slow, finding the right people takes longer than many employers expect. If you'll need extra hands for the holidays or a busy first quarter, start lining them up now.
  • Weighing your options? Our post on temp-to-hire vs. direct hire walks through when each approach makes sense.

We'll break down each report here as it comes out.
