Temp-to-Hire vs. Direct Hire: Which Is Right for Your Business?

When you need to add people to your team, one of the first decisions is how you want to bring them on. Two of the most common options are temp-to-hire and direct hire. Both can work well. The right choice depends on the role, your timeline and how much flexibility you need.

At Aggressive Hiring Group, we've helped employers in Monroe, MI and across all 50 states with both approaches for 12 years. Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide.

What is temp-to-hire?

With temp-to-hire, a worker starts on your job site as a temporary employee of the staffing agency. After a trial period, you decide whether to offer them a permanent position on your own payroll. If the fit isn't right, you can end the assignment and the agency can send someone else.

Benefits of temp-to-hire

  • Try before you commit. You see how someone actually works: whether they show up on time, learn quickly and get along with the team.
  • Lower risk. If it doesn't work out, you haven't made a permanent commitment.
  • Less paperwork up front. During the temporary period, the agency typically handles payroll and related administration.
  • Flexibility. It's useful when you're not yet sure whether a position will be needed long term.

Things to keep in mind

  • Some candidates prefer a permanent offer from day one, so a temp-to-hire role may draw a slightly different pool of applicants.
  • Workers may keep looking for permanent jobs during the trial period, so clear communication about the path to hire matters.

What is direct hire?

With direct hire, the staffing agency recruits and screens candidates, and you hire your chosen person directly onto your payroll from the start. The agency does the searching and vetting; you make the final decision and take on the employee.

Benefits of direct hire

  • Attracts candidates seeking stability. Experienced professionals often prefer a permanent offer.
  • Commitment from day one. The new employee is part of your company immediately, which can help with loyalty and engagement.
  • Saves your team time. The agency handles sourcing, interviews and screening, so you only meet qualified finalists.

Things to keep in mind

  • There's no built-in trial period, so the screening process needs to be thorough.
  • You take on payroll, benefits and administration right away.

Which is right for you?

Here's a simple way to think about it:

Choose temp-to-hire when…Choose direct hire when…
You want to see someone's work before committingYou know the role is permanent and well defined
Demand is growing but not yet predictableYou need specialized skills, such as IT or engineering
The role is hands-on, like warehouse, production or logisticsYou're filling a leadership or key office position
You've had turnover in the role beforeTop candidates in the field expect a permanent offer

Many employers use both. For example, a manufacturer might fill production and warehouse positions temp-to-hire while making direct hires for a plant engineer or office manager. There's no single right answer, only the right fit for each role.

Screening matters either way

No matter which path you choose, the quality of the candidate depends on the quality of the screening. At AHG, candidates go through our 6-step screening process, including background and reference checks and 10-panel drug screening, before they ever reach your door. Our applications are 100% paperless through our online job board (opens in a new tab), which helps us move quickly.
