Employers Add 165,000 Jobs in October, Unemployment Dips to 4.1% (Nov. 7, 2026)

Hiring came in far stronger than expected last month. Total nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 in October and the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday in its Employment Situation Summary (opens in a new tab). Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected only about 59,000 new jobs, according to CNBC (opens in a new tab).

The key numbers

  • Payrolls: +165,000, well above the average monthly gain of 48,000 over the prior 12 months.
  • Revisions: September was revised up to 60,000 (from 29,000) and August to 186,000.
  • Unemployment rate: 4.1%, down from 4.2%, with 7.1 million people unemployed.
  • Pay: average hourly earnings rose 0.4% to $38.00, up 3.1% over the year.
  • Participation: the labor force grew by 421,000 and the participation rate ticked up to 61.9%.

Where the jobs were

Professional and business services led with 70,000 jobs, including 28,000 in administrative and support services, the category that covers staffing. Health care added 42,000. Transportation and warehousing added 25,000, mostly couriers and messengers, and has gained 104,000 jobs since February. Manufacturing added 19,000 and is up 101,000 since its December 2025 low, with gains in machinery and primary metals.

What it means for employers

Put this together with the rest of the week: job openings near 7.5 million, more workers quitting, and new jobless claims at just 189,000. Demand for workers is strong, layoffs are rare, and the labor force is only slowly growing. For warehouses, factories and logistics companies heading into the holiday rush and the new year, that means more competition for the same candidates.

One bright spot for hiring managers: long-term unemployment rose, with about 2.0 million people jobless for 27 weeks or more. There are experienced workers out there looking. They just need to be found, screened and placed quickly before another employer grabs them.

What's next

The next weekly jobless claims report lands Nov. 12, and the November jobs report is due in early December.
